It really happened to a colleague from the Lazio Region and her husband: an impromptu hike, a few precautions... and off they went, swallowed up by the greenery. They spent the night outdoors; luckily it was summer. The next morning, a helicopter was needed to find them among the trees. The Selva had revealed itself in all its essence: fascinating, mysterious, and uncompromising.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"1079\">Located on the northern side of the province of Viterbo, close to Tuscany, the Selva del Lamone extends over an ancient lava plateau born from the <strong data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"884\">Vulsinio volcano over 50,000 years ago<\/strong>A harsh and wild place, always surrounded by an aura of mystery. In the sixteenth century the same <strong data-start=\"984\" data-end=\"1000\">Annibal Caro<\/strong> he described it as a \u201ctroublesome\u201d territory, worthy of the worst legends.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1359\">To make the environment even more surreal, there are the <strong data-start=\"1136\" data-end=\"1155\">volcanic boulders<\/strong> Scattered everywhere: some resemble giant mushrooms, others spires or animalistic silhouettes. Covered in moss, they blend seamlessly into their surroundings, like works of art shaped by time and nature.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1961\">With his approximately <strong data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1437\">2000 hectares of dense forest with no landmarks<\/strong>, the Selva is a paradise for expert hikers, but also a place to explore with caution. <strong data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1558\">marked trails<\/strong>, like the famous <strong data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1603\">\u201cBrigands&#039; Path\u201d<\/strong>, lead through stony paths and novel-like scenery. One of these paths leads to the remains of the <strong data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1715\">Roccoia<\/strong>, an ancient protohistoric settlement later used by the Etruscans. Traces of the past are hidden everywhere: <strong data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1863\">Rofalco, Strompia, Valderico<\/strong>, among the ruins of villages, necropolises, cisterns, bridges, Roman roads and forgotten places of worship.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"2241\">Here the undisputed king is the <strong data-start=\"1989\" data-end=\"2002\">boar<\/strong> \u2013 nothing new, it is now a regular guest even in urban centers. But in the Selva you can also spot <strong data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2181\">porcupines, foxes, martens, wild cats, squirrels, hares, roe deer<\/strong> and \u2013 looking up \u2013 maybe even a <strong data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2240\">red woodpecker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2243\" data-end=\"2666\">Among the trees they alternate <strong data-start=\"2271\" data-end=\"2289\">centuries-old Turkey oaks<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2291\" data-end=\"2300\">holm oaks<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2302\" data-end=\"2311\">maples<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2326\">downy oaks<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2328\" data-end=\"2339\">hornbeams<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2363\">wild hazelnuts<\/strong>, but also rarer species such as the <strong data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2410\">hackberry<\/strong>, all wrapped in lianas, holly and creepers. On the ground, a carpet of <strong data-start=\"2483\" data-end=\"2511\">aromatic herbs and mushrooms<\/strong>, among blackthorns, hawthorns, hollies and vitalbes. In spring, the colors of the <strong data-start=\"2598\" data-end=\"2611\">cyclamen<\/strong>, from the <strong data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"2642\">wild orchids<\/strong> and of the <strong data-start=\"2651\" data-end=\"2665\">daisies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2668\" data-end=\"3189\">In the nineteenth century, the Selva del Lamone was the ideal refuge for the <strong data-start=\"2732\" data-end=\"2754\">Maremma bandits<\/strong>These men knew the territory perfectly and for the gendarmes who were chasing them it was a natural trap. Even today, with a little imagination, through the morning mists, one seems to glimpse the shadows of <strong data-start=\"2976\" data-end=\"2987\">Tiburzi<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2989\" data-end=\"3002\">Basil<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3004\" data-end=\"3015\">Ansuini<\/strong> and other &quot;gentlemen&quot; of the time. Some see them as <strong data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3099\">Robin Hood of Tuscia<\/strong>, others remember them as <strong data-start=\"3125\" data-end=\"3147\">ruthless killers<\/strong>The truth, probably, lies somewhere in the middle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3191\" data-end=\"3548\">Another naturalistic jewel is the <strong data-start=\"3228\" data-end=\"3247\">Olpeta stream<\/strong>, which flows along the southern border of the Selva, giving rise to two spectacular waterfalls: <strong data-start=\"3333\" data-end=\"3348\">Pelicotonno<\/strong>, more scenic, and <strong data-start=\"3370\" data-end=\"3383\">Salabrone<\/strong>, wilder and more hidden. The stream originates from the <strong data-start=\"3433\" data-end=\"3456\">Mezzano lake<\/strong>, not far away, and flows into the <strong data-start=\"3490\" data-end=\"3499\">Flower<\/strong>, crossing untouched and uncontaminated landscapes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3550\" data-end=\"3851\">To visit the Selva in safety, it is recommended to go through <strong data-start=\"3612\" data-end=\"3640\">Farnese Visitor Center<\/strong> (tel. 0761.458861), where you can book <strong data-start=\"3687\" data-end=\"3704\">expert guides<\/strong>The center is located near the old wash house, the filming location of <strong data-start=\"3779\" data-end=\"3805\">Pinocchio by Comencini<\/strong> (1972) with Nino Manfredi and Gina Lollobrigida.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3853\" data-end=\"4159\">And if you get hungry after the hike, stop at the refuge <strong data-start=\"3913\" data-end=\"3932\">\u201cCasale Lamone\u201d<\/strong> (tel. 339.4853713), where you can enjoy the suggestive <strong data-start=\"3987\" data-end=\"4012\">\u201cBrigant&#039;s Lunch\u201d<\/strong>: rustic dishes such as <strong data-start=\"4034\" data-end=\"4048\">acquacotta<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4050\" data-end=\"4073\">wild boar boujone<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4075\" data-end=\"4086\">thorny<\/strong> And <strong data-start=\"4089\" data-end=\"4100\">spotted<\/strong> \u2013 a sheep boiled in broth that tastes of ancient tradition.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Perdersi nella Selva del Lamone non \u00e8 solo un modo di dire. \u00c8 successo davvero a una collega della Regione Lazio e a suo marito: un\u2019escursione improvvisata, poche precauzioni\u2026 e via, inghiottiti dal verde.
